Model 63-2SA - RS-232 to RS-422 Interface Converter
Reference Manual
1.0 General Description
The Model 63-2SA performs the function of providing a hardware conversion for full duplex signals between devices containing RS-232 and RS-422 I/O ports. Since the unit to be interfaced may look like a computer or a terminal, the device required to couple different systems together requires the facility of functioning as a DCE (Data Communications Equipment) or DTE (Data Terminal Equipment.) Thus, the converter is equipped with a DTE/DCE selector switch. This allows the Model 63-2SA to couple any RS-232 port with an RS-422 device. Two RS-232 devices can be linked over a considerable distance when using two 63-2SA's as line drivers.
1.1 Interface : Conforms to RS-232 and CCITT V.24 specifications. Pins 2 and 3, TRANSMIT and RECEIVE DATA, switch selectable (reversible).
1.2 Connectors
1.2.1 RS-232 - DB25M
1.2.2 RS-422 - Five position screw terminal
1.3 Switches
DCE/DTE - Allows selection of I/O lines for interfacing to a modem or a terminal type device. Two position dip switch to select line termination.
1.4 Indicators : LED indicators to show state of TD and RD.
1.5 Power : 110V/60Hz or 220V/50Hz
1.6 Size : 2" W x 4.15" L x .79" H (50.8 mm x 105.4 mm x 20.1 mm)
1.7 Environment : 0° to 50° C, 5% to 95% relative humidity, non-condensing
2.0 Installation
2.1 RS-232 Interface
The digital interface for the Model 63-2SA converter is a male DB-25, 25-pin connector.
2.2 RS-422 Interface
The RS-422 interface is implemented with a 5 position terminal block. The terminal block is marked TA, TB, RA, RB, and Gnd. The polarity of these signals will be that when a logic 0 (or RS-232 voltage is a +) is applied to the circuit, the A lead will be a 1 and the B lead will be a 0. If a logic 1 (or RS-232 voltage is a -) is applied to the circuit, the A lead will be a 0 and the B lead will be a 1.
2.3 Cable Termination
A two position dip switch allows termination impedances of 75, 120, 200 or none as described in the following table.

3.0 Operation
The Model 63-2SA is supplied with a switch that allows the reversing of Pins 2 and 3 of the RS-232 connector. When the switch is in the DTE position, Pin 2 of the EIA connector is an output (transmit to host device.) and Pin 3 is an input. When the switch is reversed to the DCE position, the connectors are reversed, i.e., Pin 2 is an input and Pin 3 is an output. When interfacing to a terminal, the switch should be set to DCE.
4.0 Troubleshooting
The following is a list of possible problems that may arise during the installation:
1. The data being received is garbled?
a) the DTE/DCE switches are not set properly (see section 3).
b) the equipment that the Model 63-2SA is connected to does not have the communication parameters set the same.
c) one of the four wires is broken
2. No data is being received.
a) customer equipment is not connected to the 63-2SA.
b) the DTE/DCE switches are not set properly (see section 3).
c) one or more wires between the modems are open.
d) link connection exceeds maximum specified distance.
Individual converter performance can be verified if the device to which the converter is attached is capable of operation in the non-echo mode. In this mode, the terminal will generate data from its keyboard but data will not be displayed until it is received at its port.
The converter may now be tested by providing the "loopback" connections as follows:
Jumper TA to RA
Jumper TB to RB
If the converter is functioning correctly any data entered on the keyboard of the terminal should appear on the screen.

6.0 Power
The Model 63-2SA is powered by a small, wall mounted power supply that is rated at 12 VDC @ 500 mA.
NOTE: The power supply must be connected to the Model 63-2SA, through the 1.3 mm connector located on the side of the unit, prior to plugging the power supply into the wall.
The Model 63-2SA can also be powered through pin 9 of the DB-25 connector by applying +12 VDC @ 150 mA.
